ITEM

Leah Singer and Julia Trotta are taking an obsessive look at singular objects. The women-who are friends and neighbors- started ITEM, their project where they choose an object and after a lot of research and thought put on a show to exhibit and sell what they have found. “We wanted to work on a project together”, Singer says, “and after a lot of chatting and hashing, and realizing that we had a lot of similar tastes and ideas, we decided we really wanted to obsess about something. It came from the way people shop now, people obsessively do research, constantly sourcing and looking.” For their first show this past December, Singer and Trotta chose candles. What they found was an amazing display of unique and intricate offerings, from a hand made traditional Byzantine candle made in Florina, Greece by one of the last remaining artisans of the technique, to Portuguese wax body parts. “The whole point of the project is that we are obsessing, and we never want you to look at candles the same way again. After we are done with candles we sort of go, ok and onto the next.  We want to think about an object in every way possible.” For their next project Singer and Trotta have chosen spoons. Using their blog as a working inspiration board, Singer and Trotta give a glimpse of what is to come. Click here for details about the next event and its offerings.
